At a glance

Comma vs. TeleMessage feature-by-feature comparison
| Capability | Comma Compliance | TeleMessage |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Credential storage | Secured — no unprotected credentials stored on device | Archived credentials stored directly on phone |
| Local message encryption | No unencrypted local message data | Sends plaintext chat logs to archive service |
| Network attack resistance | Resistant to MITM, DNS hijacking, and data interception | Vulnerable to DNS spoofing and MITM attacks |
| Offline archiving | Works even if user's device is offline | Not supported |
| Device-side software | No local install — zero battery or data impact | Requires users to manage app updates |
| Deleted message capture | Messages deleted from Signal, WhatsApp, and WeChat are still captured | Not supported |
| Signal experience preserved | Fully preserved — no app modifications required | Not supported |

Native capture

## Signal-Native Capture

We capture messages directly from Signal's transport layer with no modified app, no hidden client-side agents, no intercepted keys.

### Tamper protection belongs in the architecture review

A record needs protection beyond the capture connection. Review who can alter retained content, how write-once storage is configured, and what evidence can reveal a change. Comma publishes its Signal and WhatsApp capture code so your security team can inspect the connector as part of that review.

- ### Offline Resilience

Business messages are captured in real time at the point of delivery. Because capture happens off-device, the record doesn't depend on a phone staying online, backed up, or intact.

- ### Evaluate Tamper Protection

Tamper protection and tamper evidence answer different questions: can a retained record be changed, and can a change be detected? Ask to inspect the storage controls and verification evidence for your proposed deployment. [How WORM storage works](/resources/worm-storage)

- ### 40+ Channels, One Archive

WhatsApp, iMessage, Signal, Teams, Slack, Outlook, and more — all captured and stored in one place. Replace TeleMessage without replacing your workflows. [See all integrations →](/platform-integrations)

- ### AES-256 Encrypted at Rest

Data [stays AES-256 encrypted](/security-data-protection) in transit and at rest, with keys managed via AWS KMS / Azure Key Vault — never exposed in plaintext during ingestion or processing.

## Frequently asked questions

How does Comma capture Signal messages without modifying the app?

Comma operates as an authorized secondary device on the account — capturing messages directly from Signal's transport layer with no modified app, no hidden client-side agents, and no intercepted encryption keys. The Signal experience for your employees is completely unchanged.

What happens if an employee deletes a message?

Deleted messages are still captured. Comma records messages at the point of delivery, before any user-side deletion can occur. A deletion on the employee's device doesn't remove the archived record.

Will Comma archive my employees' personal Signal, WhatsApp, or WeChat conversations?

No. Smart contact filtering means only business contacts and conversations are archived. Personal messages between employees and their private contacts are excluded by design — employee privacy is preserved.

What if a device is offline when a message arrives?

Comma is built for offline resilience. Messages are captured regardless of device state. Because capture happens at the point of delivery, connectivity problems on the device don't interrupt the record.

How should we evaluate record protection?

Review the capture method, storage configuration, access controls and evidence available to verify the retained records. Comma is designed against SEC 17a-4, FINRA 4511, CFTC 1.31 and MiFID II electronic-recordkeeping requirements. This is a design statement, not regulatory approval.
